OHIO STATE FAIRGROUNDS
- GEOLOGIC WALK

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Client: Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources, Friends of Ohio Governor's Residence

Location: Columbus, Ohio

Size: 1 acre

The Ohio Geologic Walk was initially planned to be a feature in the Heritage Garden surrounding the Ohio Governor’s Residence in Bexley, Ohio.

A 16-ton glacial erratic from the Canadian Shield was installed to anchor the walk.  A more visible and visited location emerged for the walk, the ODNR Garden at the Fairgrounds.  1 million visitors vs 15,000 annually.  The glacial erratic remains at the Residence.

The new “geologic garden was designed with the input of many geological academics from Ohio universities and the sand, gravel and quarry industries.

The concept was to provide an educational exhibit that teaches all who visit about the unique geology of Ohio.  A meandering walkway was created that represents Ohio’s geologic timeline at 1” = 1million years.

Each of the following geologic eras were to have large rock exhibits along the walk exhibiting significant representing each.
