GREEN LAWN CEMETERY

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Client: Green Lawn Cemetery

Location: Columbus, OH

Size: 360 acres

Green Lawn Cemetery is a historic “Rural Cemetery” located  in the heart of Columbus, Ohio.  Governors, Statesmen, founding families of Columbus and other notables are buried here.

A long-range Master Plan was prepared expanding capacity over the next 40+ years. A thorough analysis of surroundings, site and buildings was performed.  Strengths and areas for improvement were assessed.  A committee of Board, staff and cemetery managers together created the program.  This master plan sets forth expansion opportunities in undeveloped and / or underutilized areas of the cemetery and future building expansion.

A proposed addition to the Chapel Mausoleum will increase capacity and expand upon this existing historic landmark.  New cremation burial options are expanded with the plan including: a library, columbarium, garden niches, prairie interment and niche walks.  Potential new water features, a carillon, office / sales building, family lots and historic structure restorations are proposed.

Interpretive tour routes and nature paths are also part of the plan.  In conjunction with the Audubon Society, Green Lawn Cemetery is improving and preserving bird habitat and expanding nature study among birdwatchers and the public.  The expansion plan calls for restoration of wetland, prairie expansion and forest zones on the site.
